Because the water has to go somewhere. A roof in Lake Stevens sheds thousands of gallons every winter, and if the gutters are undersized, clogged, pulling away from the fascia or draining next to the foundation, that water ends up in the fascia, the soffits, the siding and the crawl space. Most of the rot we repair on exterior jobs started with a gutter problem.
We install seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts sized and pitched for our rainfall, with hangers that hold, and we replace the fascia behind them when it is soft. New gutters and downspouts are included with every full roof replacement we do.

Here is our honest position: if your goal is maintenance-free gutters, guards are not worth it. Under fir and cedar cover, needles collect on top of guards and mat down, and the fine debris still washes through the screen and settles in the trough. You end up cleaning the guards instead of the gutters. Some homeowners with lighter tree cover like them, and we will install them if you want them, but we will not tell you they eliminate maintenance. They do not.
What actually keeps gutters working in Snohomish County is the right size, the right pitch, downspouts that are not undersized for the roof area, and a cleaning when the needles come down. Our Roof Refresh service clears the gutters and downspouts as part of the roof health assessment.

When they are sagging, seams are leaking, they have pulled away from the fascia, the fascia behind them is soft, or they overflow in normal rain because they were never sized for the roof. Sectional gutters from a home center leak at every seam eventually. Seamless gutters run continuously along each side of the house, so the only joints are at the corners and the outlets.
Gutters should also be replaced when the roof is replaced. Old gutters on a new roof are a mismatch, and taking them off during the re-roof lets us inspect and repair the fascia and drip edge properly. That is why new gutters and downspouts are included in a full roof replacement with us.
