Skylights leak because of how they were set, not because skylights leak. A skylight installed on the wrong curb, without the manufacturer's flashing kit, or with the shingles and underlayment lapped the wrong direction will let water in the first winter. One installed correctly will stay dry for the life of the roof. We install and replace skylights, including tubular sun tunnels, with the proper curb, ice-and-water membrane, step and saddle flashing and the manufacturer's kit, and we integrate them with the roof rather than sealing them onto it.
If you are replacing your roof, that is the time to replace an old skylight. Pulling a twenty-year-old skylight out of a new roof later costs far more than doing it once.

Soffits and porch overhangs are where roof water, gutter overflow and marine air all meet, so they are usually the first exterior wood to rot on a Western Washington house. We rebuild them properly: rotten framing cut out and replaced, new sheathing, vented soffit material so the attic can breathe, new fascia, drip edge and gutters, and trim that is flashed so it does not soak up water at the ends. One of our porch overhang rebuilds in the area replaced framing that had been hidden behind paint for years.

We find out how far it goes before we quote it. Rot spreads along framing well past the soft spot you can see, and the only way to price it honestly is to open the area up. We photograph what we find, replace the damaged wood, fix whatever let the water in, and rebuild the exterior so it drains and dries. We do not sister a new board onto a rotten one and paint it. Rot remediation on siding, trim, decks, overhangs, window sills and roof decking is confirmed, everyday work for us across Snohomish and King County.

If they are more than ten or fifteen years old, yes. It is far cheaper to replace them during the re-roof than to pull them out of a new roof later, and the flashing can be integrated with the new underlayment and shingles properly.
We will not. Paint hides rot for a season and the framing behind it keeps deteriorating. We cut out the damaged wood, fix what let the water in, and rebuild it to drain.
Usually overflowing or leaking gutters, a missing drip edge, or a roof edge that was never flashed. We fix the cause along with the soffit so it does not happen again.
